As a bricklayer, you’ll need to have a keen eye for detail and a desire to see a project through to completion. Projects could span from a couple of hours work, to a couple of years and you’ll spend plenty of time outdoors.
Bricklayers often work as part of a team working on a project, but you could also find yourself working independently too.
English and maths are both essential skills for ‘brickies’, as you’ll need to measure up, read plans and communicate any problems with your employer and/or clients.
It won’t just be modern builds that you’ll be required to work on. You could also train in restoration – helping to rebuild crumbling stately homes. You could even turn your talents to gardening and create intricate patio designs.
Bricklaying students at West Notts are taught in the Construction Centre (Station Park) where there is space to develop your practical skills ready to go into industry. Tutors with industry experience will be on hand to teach you the tricks of the trade, and ensure you’re working in a safe and productive way.
With the right qualifications and experience behind you, you could even progress to site manager and become the gaffer!
