Travel and tourism students can look forward to a range of opportunities including opportunities to visit tourist destinations in the UK and overseas (past trips have included Barcelona, Paris and New York), planning and hosting events within the college, including fundraising events. There will also be training opportunities – last year our students visited the British Airways’ Global Training Academy.
Courses available at the college range from Level 1 to Level 3. Progression opportunities include further study, apprenticeships and employment.
Jamie White previously studied travel and tourism at college, before progressing on to university, enjoying a year’s experience as a Walt Disney World employee, and finally securing a job as cabin crew with Thomson. He now works for one of the world’s largest tour operators, TUI Travel, as a deputy manager.
Here, Jamie explains the benefits of studying travel and tourism at West Notts – from the diverse range of subjects, to the opportunities which are opened up as part of the course.
Careers in travel and tourism are vast and varied. You won’t work the typical ‘9-5’, and you’ll be working with people from all different walks of life. Customer service will be at the forefront of your role, and you’ll need a positive attitude to deal with any potential situation which arises.
Whether you want to work in the UK or further afield, on the ground as a resort representative or in the air as qualified cabin crew; there are many different options available to students looking to work in this area.
Depending on your chosen path, you could go into entertainment, events management or work in hospitality. People who work in the travel industry may also choose to branch into marketing and promotions or retail.
And the best part? Your skills will travel with you, making you employable across the world.
At West Notts, you’ll be given the skills and qualifications needed to succeed in this competitive industry. Alongside classroom-based learning, you’ll get to partake in various trips to boost your knowledge and experience. Past trips have included Cyprus, Lanzarote and New York!
Students at West Notts can even choose to progress into higher-level study, with the foundation degree in tourism and event management.
