After studying A Levels at West Notts, Jemma Page went on to university, and has since achieved career success, first as a senior journalist for the Nottingham Post, and now as an account director at Cartwright Communications in Nottingham. Student liaison officer for Peterhouse College, Cambridge, Kathy Purdy, visited students at the Derby Road campus along with five undergraduates to talk more about life at Britain’s most prestigious universities – Cambridge and Oxford.
Undergraduates also provided information on the application and interview process, the college system at Oxbridge, lecturers and tutorials and the social life students can experience.
The group of undergraduates, who all study at Peterhouse College – the oldest of the Cambridge colleges – gave A Level students an insight into life at university, how to make informed decisions about applying for further study and helped answer questions about studying at Cambridge and Oxford.
Joseph Ashmore, 18, who is studying English literature, English language and history found talking to the undergraduates a worthwhile opportunity.
He said: “Having spoken to students who are in their first and second years at Cambridge has really inspired me to put in an application. I resat my A Levels and thought it may limit my chances to apply for Cambridge, but I’m pleased to learn it hasn’t.
“I’m now going to put together a good UCAS application and hopefully one day read English literature at Cambridge.”
Curriculum manager for academic studies, Stuart Booker, said: “This was a great, informative session for our A Level students who are considering which university to study at next.
“Meeting undergraduates in person has helped them to realise that applying to these prestigious universities is a real goal and isn’t out of reach as long as they work hard and apply themselves to their studies whilst at West Nottinghamshire College.”
